英作文に慣れないうちは漫然と and を使ってセンテンスをつないでしまうものです。この悪いクセを治すためには、その and がどういう意味なのかを考え直した上で、対応する別の「つなぎ言葉」と入れ替えることです。
［情報を足している場合］男の子を見た＋その子は足をひきずっていた
I saw a boy and he was limping. → I saw a boy who was limping.
［対照的な様子を表している場合］女の子は雨でぬれていた＋男の子はぬれていなかった
She was wet by the rain, and the boy was not wet. → She was wet by the rain. In contrast, the boy was not wet.
［因果関係を表している場合］傘がおちょこになった＋自分がずぶぬれになった
My umbrella got turned inside out and I got soaked to the skin. → My umbrella got turned inside out. As a result, I got soaked to the skin.
［時間的な関係を表している場合］朝食を済ませた＋スーパーに行った
We had breakfast and we went to the supermarket. → We had breakfast. Then we went to the supermarket.
